Less reporting, more teaching. Designing a digital tool to support New Zealand’s primary teachers. MOE screen shot of assesment visualisation

Lushai designed and directed the user experience for the Ministry of Education's Progress and Consistency Tool (PaCT) for National Standards in New Zealand. Working closely with the Ministry, Lushai led a team of 3 designers in a multi-million dollar project to build a tool to support primary school teachers in assessing students' progress against national standards.

What we did

User research

Through interviews and field studies we learnt how teachers currently assess the progress of their students. Unsurprisingly we learnt that primary teachers love their jobs and are passionate about their students. We also discovered that different teachers at different schools use a range of different templates making it difficult to make consistent assessments.

User experience design

In order to make sure we had a result that supported both teachers and the Ministry we had to clearly communicate the concepts and hidden complexities that shaped the design. We created visualisations in the form of sitemaps, templates and wireframes to guide the vision of the project. This not only created specifications for developers but helped to create an accessible overall view of a complex project that could be used to bring focus to design and development discussions.

Usability testing and project support

Lushai acted as a liaison between stakeholders and developers translating between our world of user need, the Ministry's world of business requirements and the realities of an iterative development process. Concepts were validated through observational usability testing and we developed a user guide to support the project after our involvement was completed.

"The User Experience work played a crucial role in providing clarity and structure at both the high and detailed levels of the project … the UX workstream provided a clear vision of the of the project for the rest of the team; the various components that made up the solution, how they were to look and the complexities hidden within the business logic." Sanjay D’Souza, Senior Project Manager for the Progress and Consistency Tool from Catalyst IT.
